With every project that we plan, with every building that we refurbish, with every living space that we fashion, we are creating. And, in turn, providing space for design. It is evident that this ‘job’ is by no means trivial, but requires a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience. So it is hardly surprising that the training opportunities and standards governing the activities and tasks of project development and urban planning are evolving and improving all the time. The following provides a brief overview of sustainable urban and regional development – a discipline with a future.
TU GRAZ: Master’s programme in Sustainable Urban and Regional Development
“Shaping a sustainable future. The Master’s programme is defined by its topicality. The programme is dedicated to selected socio-economic transformation processes and the relationships between society and its framing environments from the perspective of social sciences, especially in cities and regions. The course addresses issues of urban and regional development at a local and global level as well as the connections to physical geography (integrative geography). Qualitative methods as well as communication and participation processes are afforded considerable importance.” (TU Graz, from the degree programme)
TU Munich: Master’s degree programme in Urban Studies – Landscape and City
“The interdisciplinary Master’s degree programme in Urban Studies – Landscape and City is aimed at graduates of various Bachelor’s degree programmes in engineering, design and social science/
BOKU Vienna Institute for Regional Planning, Environmental Planning and Land Management
BOKU Vienna should also be mentioned as a generalist: “BOKU University is among Europe’s pre-eminent life sciences universities in Europe and is shaped by its holistic approach to research and teaching. Our academics, students and graduates work on solutions to the most pressing social issues and for a sustainable future.” (About BOKU)
Training, experience, creative drive
These three examples already demonstrate how and with which means the ‘market’ is moving to prepare the ground and how the various disciplines influence and complement each other. What is more, new experiences and learnings are gained every day from the completed projects. And anyone who is continuously willing to embrace fresh challenges will find a fulfilling, forward-looking job that never gets boring.
